Good Eat & Healthy Living- Food of Vietnam - FoodofVietNam.com   chd@xuvn.com

With the heavy reliance on rice, wheat and legumes, abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables, minimal use of oil, and treatment of meat as a condiment rather than a main course, Vietnamese food has to be among the healthiest on the planet.

Fortunately for us living in the U.S., we have the option of sampling both the healthy, simple and delicious meals-in-a-bowl provided by the Vietnamese noodle passion and more elaborate authentic meals at our local restaurants. Unlike Chinese food, the Vietnamese dishes served at restaurants in U.S. have not yet evolved to tailor to the American palate; probably, Americans have become more adventurous. So get out there and do yourself a favor, search for the authentic Vietnamese restaurants and start exploring the delightful & healthy cuisine. Or follows some of the recipes provided in this site and start experimenting at home with ingredients mostly available at local ethnic grocery markets (maybe at some large grocery store chains).

These are some few examples of popular dishes in the Vietnamese menus at Vietnamese restaurants in America:

  • Phở is a traditional Vietnamese noodle dish
  • Cơm tấm is grilled pork (either ribs or shredded) plus a Vietnamese dish called bi (bě) (thinly shredded pork mixed with cooked and thinly shread pork skin) over broken rice
  • Bánh mě (pronounced "bun me"), sometimes also referred to as a "Vietnamese hoagie", is a Vietnamese submarine sandwich, made with a French-inspired baguette
  • Goi Cuon (Spring Roll). Vietnamese fresh spring rolls are essentially nifty little self-contained salads-to-go
  • Cha Gio (Vietnamese Egg Roll: Fried Spring Roll)
  • Bun (Noodle Salad)
  • Banh Cuon (Rice Crepe), is stuffed rice film pancake
  • Nem Nuong (Grilled Vietnamese Meat Ball).

I came to America in the early ‘70’s, when I was very young lad, and settled in a small town in Colorado. At that time, the closest  thing to Vietnamese food that I could find was a bottle of soy sauce, and my most favorite condiment was ketchup because it has the three main ingredients in Vietnamese taste: sour, sweet & salty, which are key in Vietnamese cuisine. I used ketchup on everything, even salad, causing many people to stare in surprise at me.

Eventually, I acquired a taste for western cuisine, even though occasionally I tried to prepare Vietnamese dishes with available ingredient in the market, following my own recipes. In 1980, after my parents immigrated to US, I had the chance to once more enjoy authentic home-cooked Vietnamese food prepared by my mother.

This opportunity led me to renewed interest in Vietnamese cuisine, and the desire to build this Web Site as a means to share my culinary adventure with you, the public. Now living and working as an engineer (yes, I am a geek) in Arizona, I still often travel to Los Angeles and hang out in Little Saigon or San Gabriel Valley to experience the Asian community without taking a long trip back to Vietnam.

If you have any experience, story, recipe, cooking tip, suggestion and anything else related to Vietnamese food or Vietnam experience to share with other site visitors, please Email to me: chd@xuvn.com

Thank You for visiting and Bon Appetite.
