Like a Virgin
“I was really concerned the first time we were gonna have sex….what would
happen? would he know? …what if he said you’re not a virgin?” - Kully
In ‘Like a Virgin’, we ask just how important is virginity to British
Asians? Why is there a desperate need for some women to lie and go out of their
way to prove that they have not been sexually active even when they have?
Asian Network Report investigates the lengths some women are going to in order
to fake their virginity. Anita Rani uncovers how some women feel the need to
take it much further than lying by using fake blood or even having surgery.
We hear from Yasmin, a confident ‘A’ level student who is glad she’s lost
her virginity. For her, it’s a case of having sex with someone she wants to,
even though she knows there’s no way she is going to marry her current
boyfriend. But when the time does comes for her to marry and settle down, will
she come clean and tell her husband of her past experience?
Kully, now a married mother of two, had two sexual encounters prior to marrying.
She decided to keep quiet about her past and faked her virginity - but was she
right?
