Fruits Protect Against Alzheimer's Eating fruits is not only good for skin and the digestive system, but it can also protect against Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers suggest that consuming more apples, bananas, and oranges along with other fruits in our daily diet may reduce the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. Apples, bananas, and oranges appear to provide protection against oxidative stress which has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. A new study demonstrates that the antioxidants in these fruits may offer protection against neuronal cell membrane damage which is associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease—the most common form of dementia, affecting more than 13 million people worldwide. Researchers at Cornell University investigated the effects of apple, banana, and orange extracts on neuron cells and found that the phenolic phytochemicals of the fruits prevented neurotoxicity on the cells. Among the three fruits, apples contained the highest content of protective antioxidants, followed by bananas then oranges. These fruits are the most common ingredients in both Western and Asian diets, and are important sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
