SOUTHERN
CENTRAL HIGHLANDS AT A GLANCE:
The
Southern Central Highlands Zone of Vietnam includes the provinces of Kon Tum,
Gia Lai and Dac Lac.
Kon
Tum:
Kon
Tum province lies in Central Tay Nguyen Highlands and shares a border with Laos.
More than 50% of the Kon Tum’s population comprises numerous minorities such
as Xo Dang, Ba Na, Gie Trieng, Brau, Gia Rai, and Ro Mam. The climate of Kon Tum
is typically tropical with high humidity. The average rainfall is 1,880 mm. The
dry season lasts from November to April, and the rainy season, from May to
October. Famous sites include Yaly Waterfalls, Kon Tum Prison, and Ho Chi
Minh Trail.
Gai
Lai:
Gia
Lai is located in central Tay Nguyen Highlands and shares a common border with
Cambodia. The province’s population represents 1% of the country’s
population and includes the Kinh, Gia Rai, and Ba Na minorities. Gia Lai has the
same typical tropical climate than the other provinces of Tay Nguyen Highlands.
The annual average temperature is approximately 23°C. Gia Lai has many
beautiful landscapes. Kon Chu Forest is a protected area for wild
animals. Other sites include the Ayunpa military base and villages of Ba
Na ethnic group.
Dac
Lac:
Dac
Lac is the the largest province in Tay Nguyen Highlands, is located southeast of
the Truong Son Mountains and shares a 240km border with Cambodia. Though the
population of Dac Lac is not large, it includes several different ethnic
minorities such as Kinh, E De, Gia Rai, and M’nong. The area has a tropical
climate with the distinct dry and rainy seasons. The rainy season lasts from May
to November when the temperature varies between 20 and 25oC. Dac Lac has many
beautiful lakes such as Ea Kao, Eas No, Eo Don. Lac Lake is where
the M’nong minority has been living for many generations. Dac Lac’s
historical vestiges include Buon Ma Thuot Prison, Dak Tua underground
tunnels, and Bao Dai King’s building.
